WHY

Built because the alternatives leave Cumbria stranded.

Four problems have run unchecked here for too long: late-night riders stranded by an app that closed at 9pm, school runs that look like motorway queues, supermarkets shipping milk back through its own valley, and families paying four hundred pounds a month for a car that sits on the drive five days out of seven. The drivers were always here. The platform that gets out of their way was not.

PROBLEM 01

You cannot get a taxi at half past eleven on a Friday.

How LIFT solves it

Local drivers see your request the second you post it. Any of them can bid their own price and ETA. The driver who wants the job takes it. No dispatcher to call. No engaged line. No thirty-minute estimate that turns into ninety.

PROBLEM 02

The school run looks like a motorway pile-up.

How LIFT solves it

Carpool with neighbours within 1.5 miles, in a vehicle driven by an Enhanced-DBS-verified driver. Forty cars doing the work of eight, becomes eight. Fares stay in escrow until the school confirms safe arrival.

PROBLEM 03

You drive twelve miles to a supermarket for eggs.

How LIFT solves it

Order direct from the farm a mile from your house. The same Cumbria-licensed driver doing your taxi run can collect your eggs, milk and produce on the way. Money stays in the county. Fuel stays in the tank.

PROBLEM 04

Your car costs four hundred pounds a month to sit on the drive.

How LIFT solves it

Use LIFT for the school run and the weekly shop. Keep the car for what you actually need it for. Three families sharing a school pool can keep around a thousand pounds a year in each household.

The platforms that already serve this county were built for cities. We are not a city. The platforms that operate elsewhere take twenty-five to thirty percent of every fare and ship it to a head office a long way from here. We charge ten percent and we are based in Cumbria. Every penny above that platform fee stays with the driver, and the driver lives down the road from you. That is the brief.

HYPER LOCAL DELIVERY

Fresh produce from your county,
delivered by people you know.

Cumbria's farms and small producers shouldn't need a national supermarket to reach you. The same Cumbria-licensed drivers who do your taxi rides also run a delivery network for fresh milk, eggs, cheese, vegetables, bread, meat and honey. Direct from the producer's gate to your kitchen.

SCHOOL POOLS

The school run, vetted.

Carpool to school with neighbours, in a vehicle driven by a Cumbria-licensed and Enhanced-DBS verified driver. Fares stay in escrow until the school confirms your child is in the building. Built for the way a small county actually moves at 08:00.

Enhanced DBS

Every school pool driver passes an Enhanced DBS check before they can bid on a single run. Verified by us, not just self-attested.

Council-licensed

Same Cumbria Council taxi or PHV licence we require for every LIFT driver. Cross-checked against the council ledger.

Seat-locked

A four-seat car can never carry a fifth child. A database trigger blocks the booking the moment the count matches the licensed capacity.

1.5 mile pool radius

Pools are capped at a 1.5 mile neighbour radius. Your driver is from your village, not a commuter from the motorway.

Escrow until arrival

Parent fares are pre-authorised when the pool matches and held in escrow. Released to the driver only when the school confirms your child has arrived.

SOS and two-sided rating

Live tracking on every active route, in-app SOS, and two-sided ratings. The same trust scaffold we built for the taxi service, tightened for children.

01

Add your children

A quick profile per child: their school, year group, and anything a driver should know (booster seat, allergies, who is allowed to pick up).

02

Create or join a pool

Match within 1.5 miles of home, same school, same morning window. The system finds your neighbours so you do not have to do the maths.

03

Drivers bid, parents accept

DBS-verified drivers with the right vehicle type bid on the route. Existing parents in the pool approve any new joiner before they ride.

04

Live run, escrow on arrival

Track the run live on your phone. Funds release to the driver only when the school confirms your child has arrived safely.

Designed with safeguarding first, and Cumberland Council in mind.

SAFE RETURN

The ride home, booked before they head out.

Rural Cumbria runs short on taxis after 11pm. Drivers are home with their app off, dispatchers cannot connect them to riders in real time, and the rank empties. Young people end up walking roads that were never designed for pedestrians. Safe Return fixes that: you pre-book a guaranteed driver to be on standby until a cutoff you set. Your young person taps one button when they are ready, or the app dispatches the driver automatically as the cutoff approaches. If they do not respond, you decide what happens next.

Driver on standby

A Cumbria-licensed driver claims the reservation and commits to being available within the cutoff window. They are paid a £5 reservation fee for holding the slot whether the ride is called or not.

Gentle prompts before the cutoff

The app prompts the young person 90, 45, and 15 minutes before the cutoff: "Want to head home? Driver can be there in twenty." No pressure, no nagging, just a steady reminder.

One-tap "I am ready"

When the young person taps Ready, the driver gets the dispatch with their live pickup point and an ETA. No phoning a rank. No engaged tone. No standing in the cold for forty minutes.

Wellness escalation

If the cutoff passes without a ride called, the parent gets a notification with one-tap actions: dispatch the driver to last known location, extend the cutoff by thirty minutes, or call directly.

Pay only if used

A £5 reservation fee secures the driver. The ride fare is held in escrow and only captured if the ride actually happens. If your young person catches a lift with a friend, they pay nothing more.

Live tracking, masked numbers

Live driver and rider location through the journey. Phone numbers are masked end-to-end. The SOS button on the ride view is one tap from the trusted contacts you set.

01

Link the young person

Invite via phone. They accept the link. It can be your son, your daughter, your niece, anyone you have trusted-adult responsibility for.

02

Pre-book the Safe Return

Pick the pickup area (town centre, a friend's house, the pub), the home address, the cutoff time, and the fare cap. Pre-pay the £5 reservation fee.

03

A driver claims the slot

A Cumbria-licensed driver in range commits to standby. The £5 fee transfers to them for holding the time. You and your young person both get confirmation.

04

They tap Ready, or you dispatch

Your young person taps when they are ready, or the driver auto-dispatches at cutoff to their last known location. They never have to walk home.

Built so they never have to walk.

Proudly Cumbrian

Built for the place that needs it.

Cumbria's hill-farms are older than postcodes. The last train sometimes leaves at sundown. The milk run goes via the next village down. And every afternoon, RAF Typhoons skim the fells in the LFA17 low-flying corridor that has been part of life here for half a century.

LIFT is a platform built for that exact county, by people who know it. The same Cumbria-licensed drivers handle your rides and your weekly produce. The fees stay inside the county. The pace stays human.

Lifted by Cumbria.

SAFETY & TRUST

Safe enough that your mum uses it.

Cumbria is small. People know people. LIFT is built so the platform never makes that feel less safe.

Verified, manually

Every driver's Cumbria Council licence is checked by a human against the council ledger before they go live.

SOS, on every screen

A single tap shares your live location with your chosen contacts and dispatches a real-time alert to LIFT support.

Number masking

Rider and driver never see each other's mobile numbers. Calls and messages route through the app.

Trip check-ins

If your ride goes off-course or stays stationary too long, LIFT prompts you and your trusted contact.

Stored, encrypted

Live location and trip data are encrypted at rest and behind row-level security in the database. Nobody else sees them.

Two-sided ratings

Riders rate drivers and drivers rate riders. Repeat low-raters are reviewed by the LIFT trust team.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

More fare in the county.

When a national platform takes 25-30%, that money leaves the county. LIFT's flat 10% keeps the rest where it belongs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

The questions people actually ask.

If yours is not here, email Micky@mickai.co.uk and we will add it.

How is LIFT different from the taxi apps I already use?

Existing apps either dispatch through a call centre (engaged tones, no answer at 11pm) or push you to the cheapest driver in a regional pool that may have nobody nearby after dark. LIFT works the other way around. You post the trip, every Cumbria-licensed driver within range sees it on their phone, and any of them can bid their own price and ETA. You pick the bid you want. There is no dispatcher to call, no hold music, no thirty-minute estimate that turns into ninety.

How does the bidding actually work?

You enter your pickup, your drop-off and any vehicle preferences (Standard, XL, Estate, WAV, Executive). Drivers within 5km see the request live on their phone with the pickup and drop-off addresses, the distance, and the time. Each driver who wants the job submits a price and an ETA. You see the bids stream in (usually within 30 seconds) and pick the one you like best, by price, ETA, or driver rating.

What is Safe Return and how does it work?

Safe Return is a safeguarding feature for young people heading out at night, particularly in rural areas where finding a taxi after 11pm is unreliable. As a parent or trusted adult, you link your young person via phone and pre-book a guaranteed Cumbria-licensed driver to be on standby until a cutoff time you set. The driver gets a £5 reservation fee for committing to the slot. Your young person gets gentle in-app prompts at 90, 45 and 15 minutes before cutoff, plus a one-tap "I am ready" button that dispatches the driver to their live location. If they do not respond by cutoff, you get a notification with one-tap actions: dispatch the driver to their last known location, extend the cutoff by 30 minutes, or call them directly. The ride fare is only charged if the ride actually happens, so if your young person catches a lift with a friend you only pay the £5 reservation.

Why do you charge 10%? Most apps charge 25 to 30%.

Existing platforms run city-scale offices and pay for national ad campaigns. We do not. LIFT is built and run inside Cumbria by people who already know the council, the licensing system and the geography. Our cost base is a fraction of a national platform. Ten percent is enough to keep the lights on; the rest stays with the driver and inside the county.

How do school pools work, and are they safe?

Add your child with their school and year. The system matches you with parents within 1.5 miles of you whose children go to the same school at the same morning window. Drivers who hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate (which we re-verify on a 2-year cycle) bid on the daily route. Existing parents in a pool approve any new joiner before they ride. Fares are pre-authorised on your card when the pool matches and held in escrow until the school confirms your child has safely arrived. Then 90% releases to the driver. Capacity is hard-locked at the database level: a four-seat car can never carry a fifth child.

Are the drivers actually vetted?

Every LIFT driver holds a current Cumbria Council taxi or PHV licence, checked against the council ledger by hand before they go live. School pool drivers additionally pass an Enhanced DBS check with a 2-year renewal cycle. Vehicles are checked for current MOT and insurance. No driver can take a single fare until all of that is in place, and any one of them lapsing freezes the account until it is reinstated.

What about late-night safety?

Every active LIFT ride has live driver tracking on your phone (and on a trusted contact phone if you choose to share the trip). An SOS button on every ride opens a one-tap alert to your trusted contacts and to LIFT support, with your live location attached. Driver and rider numbers are masked, calls route through the app, so neither sees the other personal mobile.

What if I am outside Cumbria?

LIFT only operates within the historical Cumbria county boundary (everything that used to be Cumbria before the 2023 unitary authority split, so Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness combined). If you try to book a pickup or drop-off outside, the app will say so. We will not become a national platform. If and when we expand, it will be deliberate and to neighbouring rural counties that share the same local-first model.

How does fresh produce delivery work?

Browse the catalogue of partner farms, add what you want to a basket, pick a delivery slot from the next 3 days. The same Cumbria-licensed driver who handles taxi runs collects your order from the farm and brings it to your door inside that slot. You pay the producer directly through us. We add a flat delivery fee that goes to the driver.

How and when do drivers get paid?

For taxi rides and produce deliveries, the driver is paid the moment the trip completes via Stripe Connect, minus the ten percent platform fee. For school pools, the fare is held in escrow and released when the school confirms safe arrival. Drivers can request an instant payout to their bank account at any time.

What happens if a driver does not turn up, or I need to cancel?

You can cancel through the app at no cost any time before they accept your bid, and within 2 minutes after acceptance. After that a £3 cancellation fee applies and 50% of it goes to the driver. If a driver cancels on you mid-route or fails to arrive, you do not pay and LIFT credits a future ride. School pool cancellations on an active run trigger a partial capture (50% to the driver for compensation) and refund the rest.
